Most of the tea-growing countries across the world have reported higher crop in the first half of 2013, despite adverse weather condition. The production was higher by 81.3 million kg across major tea producing countries in the first six months of 2013, with Kenya reporting a massive increase of 67.5 million kg, followed by Sri Lanka with 7.3 million kg. Tea production in India under the review period was higher by 15.6 million kg. North India reported 17.6 million kg increase in production, whereas in south India it declined by 2 million kg, United Planters’ Association of Southern India UPASI said in its Overview of Plantation Sector. The production during Jan-June 2013 in North was 280.1 million kg and South 115.4 million kg as against 262.5 million kg and 117.4 million kg in Jan-June period last year, respectively. In South India, the crop in the coming months is also anticipated to be lower on account of heavy showers and overcast conditions that prevailed in June and July, which means South India would report lower crop for the fourth successive year. As for exports, it declined  from 215.4 mn kg in 2011 to 205.4 mn kg in 2012. Latest export trends in 2013 suggested a turnaround; compared to 44.7 million kg in Jan-July 2012, India exported 59.7 mn kg this year, it said.
