Bosnia and Hercegovina – Customs officers arrested over coffee smuggling ring
Bosnian police said Wednesday they arrested 11 customs officers accused of allowing some 3,000 tonnes of coffee to be smuggled into the country.
The officers allegedly let more than 130 trucks transporting green coffee -- produced from coffee beans that have not been roasted -- into the country between 2009 and 2011, officially declaring they were carrying expanded clay.
We estimate that they have damaged the state budget to the tune of 4.5 million euros ($5.7 million), police spokeswoman Kristina Jozic told reporters.
A total of 138 trucks crossed the border with three million kilogrammes of coffee that have illegally been placed on the local market.
