Uganda to quadruple coffee production
Uganda, Africa's largest coffee exporter is planning to quadruple coffee production in the next few years to profit from rising global consumption and increase export earnings, the Ugandan presidency said Saturday.
A presidential spokeswoman quoted President Yoweri Museveni as saying the East African nation plans to raise production to at least 12 million 60-kilogram bags in the medium term, from the current 3 million bags. The government is also exploiting opportunities for value addition for its coffee to maximize returns.
Mr. Museveni made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the International Coffee Organization led by its executive director, Roberio Oliveira, in Kampala, the Ugandan capital.
According to President Museveni, part of the national strategy to increase coffee production is to replace old trees with new ones. Most of the country's coffee trees are more than 40 years old, rendering them less productive.
The country intends to plant at least 20 million high yielding new coffee trees every year, up to 2020 to be able to meet the production target.
Coffee is Uganda's second leading foreign revenue earner after tourism. The country exports nearly all its coffee output in bean form, mainly to the European Union, U.S. and Asian markets.
Uganda's 2012-13 coffee production is expected to increase by at least 10% from a year earlier and reach around 3 million bags.
