Ho-hum. Finland continues to have highest per capita coffee consumption in the world
Things may come and things may go, governments may even change evey now and then, but there is one thing that you can bet the farm on: the Finns are still the world’s leaders in coffee drinking.
In fact, Finland has strengthened its position as the country with the highest per capita coffee consumption on the planet. According to the Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation (ETL), Finns consumed 10 kilos of roasted coffee per capita in 2010.The favourite coffee variety in Finland continues to be light roasted type, which accounts for 94 per cent of total coffee consumption. However, dark roasted coffee is gradually growing in popularity.
In 2010, Finnish roasteries delivered a total of 46.4 million kilos of roasted coffee to shops and caterers. The figure was actually four per cent lower than that for the previous year.
On the other hand, imports of roasted coffee into Finland increased quite sharply to 7.3 million kilos, while in 2009 the corresponding figure was 5.2 million kilos. The coffee was mostly imported from the Netherlands.
The amount of instant coffee consumed in Finland fell just short of 1.0 million kilos.
In other words, not very much: Finns have never really taken to the stuff in the same way as proper coffee .
